How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photoshoot at Little Somewhere
Preparing for Your Baby’s First Photos
Your newborn photoshoot should be a relaxing, enjoyable experience, not something to stress about! At Little Somewhere, my sessions are completely baby-led and designed to be as calm and comfortable as possible for both you and your little one.
Here are a few simple tips to help you prepare and make the most of your session.
1. Keep Baby Cosy and Sleepy
Sleepy babies photograph beautifully, so try to keep baby awake for a short time before you leave for the studio (perhaps a bath or a little play). Aim to feed them just before or as you arrive - this usually helps them drift off naturally once we start shooting.
Don’t worry if timing doesn’t go exactly to plan, babies are in charge here! Every session allows plenty of time for feeding, changing and cuddling breaks.
2. Dress Baby in Something Easy to Remove
Choose something simple for the journey, ideally a loose-fitting babygrow that opens down the front. Avoid anything that goes over the head, as we’ll likely move baby straight into a wrap or outfit once they’re asleep.
Bring a spare outfit for going home, and maybe an extra vest or muslin cloth just in case!
3. What to Bring (and What You Can Leave at Home)
You don’t need to bring much, the studio is fully equipped with everything we’ll need.
Here’s what’s helpful to pack:
A spare bottle or expressed milk if you’re bottle-feeding
Dummies if baby uses one (sometimes it helps settle them)
Nappies and wipes (though I always keep extras here)
Snacks and drinks for you — there’s also tea, coffee and biscuits waiting!
I have a full collection of wraps, outfits, and props, so you can leave all that at home. If there’s a special blanket or family item you’d love included, bring it along and I’ll style it into your session. If there is something you would really like little one to wear, you are welcome to bring it along too.
4. What to Wear (for Parents and Siblings)
Neutral, soft tones always photograph best, think creams, beige, white, soft grey or pastels. Denim is another great way to coordinate easily. Avoid busy patterns or bold logos, as they can distract from baby.
For siblings, simple outfits with minimal patterns work perfectly. Bare feet look sweet and natural too!
If you’re unsure, you’re always welcome to message me photos of your outfit choices before the session, I’m happy to help you coordinate everything.
5. Expect a Warm Studio
The studio will be toasty warm - perfect for keeping baby settled during bare-skin poses. For you, that means dressing in light layers you can easily remove.
There’s a comfy sofa, relaxing music and refreshments waiting, many parents use this time to sit back, unwind and even catch a little nap while I do my thing!
6. Relax and Enjoy the Experience
The most important thing is to relax and go with the flow. I’ve photographed countless newborns and have specialist training in newborn safety and handling. Baby is always in safe hands, and everything we do is gentle, slow and baby-led.
If baby needs feeding, cuddling or a little break - that’s absolutely fine. Please don’t stress! Many parents have told me I have the patience ‘of a Saint!’, but in actual fact I just love my job and I don’t mind one bit if it takes a bit of time!
After Your Session
Once your session is complete, I’ll carefully edit your images and invite you back to the studio for your viewing appointment. You’ll get to see your full gallery, choose your favourite images, and explore options for prints and wall art.
