If you’re visiting this page, your little one is probably approaching their first birthday and you are wondering where on earth the last year has gone! As a newborn and family photographer in Newcastle, and as a Mammy too, I know how quickly time really does fly. Which is why I do what I do, to celebrate these special milestone moments.

Let’s face it, your little one only turns one once! Their first birthday should be celebrated in style! Here at Little Somewhere, it’s not just about the cake smash - we capture classic portraits and family photos too, making sure you have some really special memories that little one will be looking back at on their 21st birthday and beyond!
How Will My Birthday Session Work?
When you arrive at my studio in Blagdon, which is located on the border of Newcastle upon Tyne and Northumberland, I’ll give your little one a little bit of space and time to settle in whilst we have a quick chat to go over the final details of the photoshoot.
The session is then broken down into four main parts:
Family Photos
These are completely optional but are a lovely way to capture your family together.
Mini Portrait Session
This is a lovely opportunity to dress your little one in their best outfit and capture some natural portraits. At this age, their personality is shining through - we give them wooden blocks, balloons and ‘ONE’ letters to play with and watch them have fun!
Cake Smash
The fun part! Your baby is introduced to their cake and encouraged to explore at their own pace. Whether they dive straight in or take a more cautious approach, I’ll gently capture all those natural reactions and moments as they unfold.
Bubble Bath Clean Up
We’ll finish the session with a warm bubble bath clean-up, perfect for capturing happy splashes, big smiles and those adorable post-cake moments - and sending your little one home clean and content.

When Should I Book A First Birthday Photoshoot?
The ideal time for a first birthday photoshoot is when little one is 10-11 months old. This way, they are generally sitting confidently and already used to eating solid foods, so the cake will be a real treat! It also guarantees you have your images back in time for their special day!

To secure your session, I just ask for a £79 booking fee. This price includes a custom made cake for your session.
Your viewing appointment will be about 7-10 days after your photoshoot
You’ll get a fully edited gallery of at least 20 images
View your photos on the big screen & choose your favourites
When it comes to choosing your images and products, there’s no pressure at all. You don’t need to decide anything in advance - you’ll simply make your choices once you’ve seen your finished gallery. And even then, there’s no minimum spend or obligation to buy. You only purchase what you truly love.

My studio is on the Blagdon Estate, just a couple of minutes off both the A1 and the A19. I’m so lucky, I have a beautiful, countryside location where I am surrounded my farmland and woodland and often see deer and squirrels at my window, but don’t worry! I have a large free car park!

Ideally, book when your little one is around 6-7 months earlier or sooner.

That’s absolutely fine - and very common! Every baby reacts differently. Some dive straight in, some take their time, and some prefer to observe rather than touch. The session is completely baby-led, and beautiful images can be captured whatever your baby’s personality or reaction, but I do have some tricks up my sleeve for getting them a bit more involved!

Cake Smash sessions are most popular for first birthdays, but they can be adapted for older babies too. They’re usually booked for around 10-11 months so images are ready in time for birthday celebrations.

We do supply a cake, which we will match to your theme as best we can. If your child has any dietary requirements please let us know at the time of booking.

Simple outfits work best, and I’ll guide you on colours and styles ahead of your session. We do have a selection of outfits here at the studio, however, you’re welcome to bring something of your choosing too. Many parents go for a neutral outfit for the sitter photos and something more playful for the cake smash itself.

I recommend neutral colours, with no big logos or patterns. Co-ordinating colours will help achieve a classic look too.

Please bring along any toys that will help your little one smile and feel relaxed. We also encourage you to bring snacks - these can be used alongside the cake if little one isn’t sure about the cake itself.
