What is a Cake Smash?
A cake smash is a fun, relaxed photoshoot designed to celebrate your baby’s first birthday (or another special milestone). Your little one is given a cake to explore in their own way, whether that means digging straight in, having a little taste, or simply poking it with curiosity. There’s no right or wrong way for a cake smash to go; the session is all about capturing personality, expressions and those wonderfully messy, joyful moments in a calm, baby-led environment.

If you’d like, we can begin your session with relaxed family photographs in our signature Whispering Whites room.
A mini sitter session
Before the cake comes out, we’ll capture a few clean, simple portraits of your baby as they are right now - full of personality, expressions and curiosity.
The cake smash
The fun part! Your baby is introduced to their cake and encouraged to explore at their own pace. Whether they dive straight in or take a more cautious approach, I’ll gently capture all those natural reactions and moments as they unfold.
Bubble bath clean-up
We’ll finish the session with a warm bubble bath clean-up, perfect for capturing happy splashes, big smiles and those adorable post-cake moments - and sending your little one home clean and content.
FAQ’s
What if my baby doesn’t want to smash the cake?
That’s absolutely fine - and very common! Every baby reacts differently. Some dive straight in, some take their time, and some prefer to observe rather than touch. The session is completely baby-led, and beautiful images can be captured whatever your baby’s personality or reaction, but I do have some tricks up my sleeve for getting them a bit more involved!
Do you provide the cake?
We do supply a cake, which we will match to your theme as best we can, however, if your child has any specific dietary requirements, we recommend supplying your own cake.
What should my baby wear?
Simple outfits work best, and I’ll guide you on colours and styles ahead of your session. We do have a selection of outfits here at the studio, however, many parents prefer to choose something themselves and go for a neutral outfit for the sitter photos and something more playful for the cake smash itself.
What age are Cake Smash sessions suitable for?
Cake Smash sessions are most popular for first birthdays, but they can be adapted for older babies too. They’re usually booked for around 11 months so images are ready in time for birthday celebrations.

To secure your session, I just ask for a £79 booking fee.
Around a week after your photoshoot, you’ll be invited back to the studio to see your fully edited gallery of at least 20 images. This is such a lovely part of the experience, you’ll get to relax, view your photographs on the big screen, and choose your favourites. You’ll also be able to explore my wall art options, so I can help you design a beautiful, custom display for your home.
When it comes to choosing your images and products, there’s no pressure at all. You don’t need to decide anything in advance - you’ll simply make your choices once you’ve seen your finished gallery. And even then, there’s no minimum spend or obligation to buy. You only purchase what you truly love.
